Northern & Eastern grids collapse: Biggest power failure in India

NEW DELHI/KOLKATA: In what is being called as the biggest ever power failure in India, half of of the country was without electricity supply on Tuesday afternoon.
This affected hundreds of trains and lakhs of households and establishments as the grid that connects generating stations with customers collapsed for the second time in two days, highlighting the precarious state of the power sector in the country.

However, confirming the collapse of northern and eastern grids, Power Minister Sushil Kumar Shinde told television channels that power for all essential services like railways and metro will be restored in an hour.

The blackout which has left 600 million people without electricity in one of the world's most widespread power failures.

While the northern grid failed for the second straight day, the eastern and north-eastern grids too collapsed. These three grids carry about 50,000 MW of electricity.

About 22 states and union territories have been impacted by the failure of the three grids.

The northern grid covers nine regions - Punjab, Haryana, Rajasthan, Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, J&K and Chandigarh.

At least six states are covered by the eastern grid. They are West Bengal, Chattisgarh, Bihar, Jharkhand, Orissa and Sikkim.

Meanwhile, the north eastern grid connects Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, Assam, Meghalaya, Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura.

India has five electricity grids - Northern, Eastern, North Eastern, Southern and Western. All of them are inter- connected, except the Southern grid.

All the grids are being run by the state-owned Power Grid Corporation, which operates more than 95,000 circuit km of transmission lines.

Power Grid Corp India Ltd sources said that the Tuesday's collapse is the most severe ever in the country. "Grid incident occured at 1300hrs effecting the Northern, Eastern & North Eastern Grid. System under restoration," Eastern Regional Load despatch Centres said.

According to spokesperson, Power Grid Corporation is hpeful of gradually reviving the grid in two hours.

Central Electricity Authority officials have said that the collapse of three grids is unprecedented. "May take over a day to recover. Three grids - Northern, North eastern, and eastern - have collapsed together. The grids will be restored seperately," officials said.

According to the officials, hydro power plants will be started first. Thermal plants may take the longest to come back on stream. "The entire drill may take a complete day. Situation may be normal by Wednesday," they added.

All power generating stations connected to North, East and North East have been shut down.
