Every computer user likes doing
things quickly and in their own way. It is definitely a good idea to
learn tips and tricks that help you do your work better and in a quicker
way. While Mac users treat their computers with a lot of precaution,
and love the simplicity of Mac OS X,
they rarely explore the many
customization options that the OS offers. And if you’re one of those Mac
users who would love to discover new ways to do things on your Mac,
keep reading to learn some new tricks and get a few steps closer to
becoming a Mac expert.
Recovering your password
You turn on your Mac, and login screen appears. But wait; do you
remember your password? Nope, you have forgotten it. Does the password
hint help? No. At this point, you might think, “I’m doomed!” Well, not
really. Insert the recovery disc that came with your Mac (or
alternatively you can use a purchased/burned copy of Mac OS X Snow
Leopard, or Lion), and reboot your Mac. As it restarts, press and hold
the ‘C’ key on your keyboard. Doing so will load the Mac OS X installer
from the disk. No, we’re not going to tell you to reinstall the entire
OS just because you’ve forgotten your password.
When the installer
loads up, choose a language (usually English) and click the next button
(indicated by an arrow) and the installer will welcome you. Look at the
menu bar at the top of the screen, Click ‘Utilities’, and then click
‘Password Reset’. Follow the instructions to reset the password, and
then you can quite the installer, restart your Mac, and use the
newly-set password to log in.
Desktop tricks
Now that you’ve logged in to your desktop, you might come across a
plethora of icons in your dock. Surely you would like to get rid of some
of the icons. To do so, you just need to press and hold the option key,
and then click and drag the icon from the menu bar down to the desktop.
It will vanish, poof, gone (literally!).
Sometimes, your Mac
refuses to eject a CD or DVD that you’ve inserted. As you might know,
Macs don’t have a physical eject button on the optical drive. In such a
case when the disc won’t come out, pressing the eject key on your
keyboard has no effect, moving the disc’s icon to trash doesn’t help
either. So how do you get it out in such a case? Simply restart your
Mac, and as it is booting up, click and hold the left mouse button (just
click and hold the mouse, or the trackpad), and voila, the disc will be
ejected in a couple of seconds.
